“The act of philanthropy is a spiritual act, an expression of caring for one’s fellow human beings.  It is a belief in the future that the future can be good.  It is investing in that future.  It is helping to make the dream come true.”  -Arthur C. Frantzreb

Gifts of Stock

There can be many advantages to a donor who makes a gift of stock.  If you itemize your tax return, gifts of securities entitle you to a federal income tax charitable deduction.  In the case of appreciated securities, you may deduct the full fair market value of your gift once you have held onto the securities for at least one year and use your deduction up to 30% of your adjusted gross income.  You are permitted to carry any unused deduction forward for up to five additional years.  In addition, you will avoid paying any capital gains tax on the stock you donate.

Tax laws change frequently, so please discuss your gift of stock with your attorney or financial advisor.

To make a transferred gift of stock, instruct your broker or banker to call Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Lancaster at (717) 293-4800.  If you hold the securities, mail or hand deliver the certificate(s), without any endorsement or assignment, to the Development Office at 1514 North 2nd Street, Harrisburg, PA  17102.  Enclose a letter stating the purpose of your gift and a signed stock power form for each gift (forms are available from your broker or banker).  Except for your signature, the stock power form should be blank and your signature should be exactly as your name appears on the stock certificate.

Please inform the Development Office when you are making a gift of stock so that you may be acknowledged properly.  Call (717) 234-2479  x108.

Corporate Matching Gifts

Many of our supporters work for companies that will match their charitable contribution to Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley.  This can sometimes double or even triple your gift to Planned Parenthood!   Some companies also match gifts made by retirees.  Please ask your human resources office if your company sponsors a matching gift program.  Human resources personnel can provide you with the forms you will need to send with your gift.

Memorials and Tributes

While it is difficult for Planned Parenthood to acknowledge the loss of long-time supporters and volunteers, we frequently are warmed and touched by the many memorial gifts we receive.  If someone close to you leaves you with good memories about their devotion to children, choice, or women’s issues, please consider honoring their memory with a gift to Planned Parenthood.  We will acknowledge your contribution to whomever you specify.

The many people who choose to share the joyous and happy occasions of their lives with Planned Parenthood often delight us.  A contribution to our Annual Fund makes an excellent birthday, anniversary, new baby, graduation, or other congratulatory gift!  We will acknowledge your contribution to the honoree, of course.

Fund For Choice

The phrase “right to choose” is meaningless when a woman cannot afford to secure an abortion. Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley’s Fund For Choice assists women in central Pennsylvania by paying for a portion of their abortion services when personal resources fail.  The Fund operates solely on the basis of individual contributions.

You can make a secure on-line gift to Fund For Choice now.

Or you  may mail your contribution to Fund For Choice, 1514 North 2nd Street, Harrisburg, PA  17102.

Your Will and Other Planned Giving Arrangements

Your will affirms, honors, and protects what matters most in your life – your loved ones, your principles, and your values.

Did you know that 70% of all Americans die without a will?  Without a will, your estate will be distributed according to state laws and, unfortunately, those laws may differ from your wishes. Creating a will is the single most important step you can take to ensure that your final wishes are carried out.  A will also may be your most meaningful opportunity to establish a legacy for an organization like Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley, an organization whose work is close to your heart.

How to include Planned Parenthood in your will:

A specific bequest  You can establish a bequest of a particular dollar amount or asset.  The language for a specific bequest is:

“I give, bequeath, and devise [dollar amount] to Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley or its successor, now or formerly in the City of Harrisburg, 1514 North 2nd Street, in the state of Pennsylvania, to be used for its general purposes.”

A residuary bequest  You can give all or part of the property remaining in your estate after debts, expenses, and specific bequests are paid.  Such a provision can be made as follows:

“I give, bequeath, and devise [all, or a percent of] the rest, residue, and remainder of the property, both real and personal, wherever situated, which I may own or be entitled to at my death, to Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley or its successor, now or formerly in the City of Harrisburg, 11514 North 2nd Street, in the state of Pennsylvania, to be used for its general purposes.”

Other ways to support the future of family planning and reproductive choice:

Naming Planned Parenthood of the Susquehanna Valley a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy is another way to help ensure reproductive health care for generations to come.  Life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities or charitable trusts, also support the future of Planned Parenthood while providing you with payments for life.  As always, you should check with your own financial advisor or attorney when making a planned gift.
